Design and build a game designed for children between 5-12 years old. Teaching the children through play about the importance of bio diversity. In partnership with Kiwi Kids Organisation produce an open source file game that can be made by teachers with access to a reasonable workshop.
Concept Generation
Bees were identified as a crucial element of biodiversity that effects the survival of many other species of animals. By teaching kids about the importance of honey bee pollination we can break down fear barriers associated with bees as well as inform on the dangers of pesticides and other pests to keep the cycle of fruit/vegetable growth strong. This also provides the opportunity to learn from the humble bee about teamwork and co-operation.
Play testing the game dynamics, costumes, component designs, instructions and narrative.
Development
The concept of a connect 4 style product was developed to be lazer cut from plywood. Kids would be able to dress up as bees and run around outside collecting nectar and pollen tokens to be placed into the central hive. User manuals were created to show the build.
User Manual
The user manual informs the teacher how to assemble the hive and flours while also showing how to cut and sew the costumes for both the bees and farmers.
Activity Book
This booklet is given to the teacher and includes rules of the game and a narrative to be read out to the children. This narrative follows the story of Farmer Brown who needs the bees help to grow his crops and teaches the kids about what farmers do to look after the bees avoiding harmful pesticides.
Game Play
The game consists of three rounds that include all bees working together, two different bee hives competing and also a group of bees and a group of farmers. Once the rounds are over there is room for free play too.
